Your pillow ought to be your best friend instead of your worst enemy. Give it some thought... one-third of your life is spent with your pillow. And, believe me, you pillow knows better than anybody when you're sleeping well and when you're sleeping poorly. Making the right choice for your pillow can certainly bring more comfort and better sleep for that large chunk of your life.
You spend so much time with your pillow that it's worth going to the trouble of selecting one that's right for you. You will have your own sleeping style; perhaps you sleep mostly on your side, perhaps on your back, or a mixture of the two - this determines the ideal height of your pillow. Depending upon the state of your neck, spine and back you will require a specific amount of support from your pillow, you'll even have your own preferences for the pillow filling; synthetic (hollow fibre) or natural (feather or down), or perhaps something more unusual like memory foam, latex, cotton or water.
A pillows thickness is also something to keep in mind, you should choose thickness based on the position you sleep in. If you sleep mostly on your side you will want a thicker pillow to get the neck support you need. If you sleep on your back than a thin pillow would be your best choice, a thin pillow will give you enough neck support but won't cause neck strain. A feather pillow can also be made flat so would also be a good choice if you sleep on your back.
