Well, each pillow type has its advantages and disadvantages; that is why you should consider your own requirements and needs while choosing.

Choosing the right pillow is very important in achieving restful sleep. A good pillow will support the head and neck without applying excessive pressure, as it conforms to the exact shape of the bed, thus spreading the weight evenly and uniformly along the vertebrae.

First of all, a neck pillow is a pillow with built in support for the neck. A couple of names used synonymously with neck pillows are: support pillows or contour pillows. Sometimes the term orthopedic pillow or chiropractic pillow is used as well.

I draw a line between "sleeping pillows" and "looking good pillows." As for "looking good pillows" we may put those on the bed, but you better not sleep with them. You choose those for their sole purpose: to look good. Make sure that those good looking pillows will keep their shape and make sure it's the right length for your bed. That's really all that matters.

Your pillow ought to be your best friend instead of your worst enemy. Give it some thought... one-third of your life is spent with your pillow. And, believe me, you pillow knows better than anybody when you're sleeping well and when you're sleeping poorly. Making the right choice for your pillow can certainly bring more comfort and better sleep for that large chunk of your life.

A pillows thickness is also something to keep in mind, you should choose thickness based on the position you sleep in. If you sleep mostly on your side you will want a thicker pillow to get the neck support you need. If you sleep on your back than a thin pillow would be your best choice, a thin pillow will give you enough neck support but won't cause neck strain. A feather pillow can also be made flat so would also be a good choice if you sleep on your back.

A down pillow is one of the types of pillow used by many people nowadays. Down pillows are filled with goose down. The latter is the soft material located under the feathers of a goose providing a comfortable and soft feeling to people sleeping on such. Down pillows are rather expensive, however they don't provide enough support for the neck of some people.
